In response to public input and to improve safety along the Haslett Road Corridor, the Township is collecting traffic count data. This study will help us explore ways to calm traffic and increase safety for all users.

Possible improvements that will be considered include:

  • Adding pedestrian crosswalks along the Haslett Road corridor at Westminster Way, near the Parkwood YMCA, Boise Ile Drive, Bayonne Avenue, Benson Drive, Green Road, and Copper Creek Drive/Bird Farm Lane.
  • Enhancing pedestrian safety at new and/or existing crosswalks on Haslett Road by utilizing flashing beacons, hawk signals, and/or mini pedestrian refuge islands, similar to those recently constructed by the city of East Lansing on Burcham Drive and Hagadorn Road.
  • Determining if a road diet can be implemented on the remaining 4-lane segment of Haslett Road from Park Lake Road to Marsh Road. Road diets improve safety for all roadway users by reducing vehicle-to-vehicle conflicts, calming traffic, and creating a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists.
    •  More information about road diets: https://highways.dot.gov/safety/other/road-diets

Additional details about the Haslett Road Corridor Study are available on pages 143-241 of the December 2, 2025, Township Board meeting packet below:

To further improve pedestrian safety, the Township began construction of the American House Meridian Pathway. This off-road trail will link the existing Inter-Urban/MSU to Lake Lansing Trail with the pathway on the south side of Haslett Road at the Benson Drive intersection (shown in green on the map below). In the future, the trail will be extended north through Hillbrook Park to connect with Lake Lansing Road (shown in purple on the map below).

In 2026 or 2027, the Township will also be constructing a pathway along the south side of Haslett Road from Okemos Road to Park Lake Road (shown in green on the map below). This project will be funded in part by a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant that the Township received in October of 2025.

Once this pathway is constructed, there will be a contiguous pathway on the north and south sides of Haslett Road from the city limit of East Lansing to Copper Creek Drive/Bird Farm Lane in Meridian Township.

Project Updates
UPDATE (2/5/26)

Equipment has been deployed across the Haslett Road corridor to collect traffic and pedestrian counts. The data will be reviewed and the Township should have an update regarding our findings in March or April 2026.

Construction of the American House Pathway, an off-road trail, will link the existing Inter-Urban/MSU to Lake Lansing Trail, with the pathway on the south side of Haslett Road at the Benson Drive intersection. Construction began in late 2025 and is anticipated to be completed by June 12, 2026.
