MDOT has arranged for the following detours while the Grand River Avenue/M-43 bridge is being demolished and reconstructed.

Grand River Avenue Detour

Travelers heading eastbound or westbound on Grand River Avenue will detour around the construction area using North Meridian Road, Haslett Road, and Zimmer Road. These roads are best equipped to handle increased traffic from detours.

Meridian Road Detour

Travelers who would ordinarily travel northbound on Meridian Road and then westbound on Grand River Avenue will detour using Meridian Road, Jolly Road, and Okemos Road.

The bridge has been reopened as of December 12, 2025. Thank you for your patience through this project! 

UPDATE (10/14/25)

MDOT will close the North Meridian Road and Grand River Avenue intersection on Monday, October 20. The intersection is expected to reopen on Sunday, November 23.

The North Meridian Road intersection is being closed as part of MDOT's bridge replacement project. Construction crews will raise the intersection’s elevation to match the new bridge height and then reopen the intersection in November, depending on how weather impacts the construction schedule.

What this means:

• If you are traveling east on Grand River Avenue, you will not be able to turn left onto North Meridian Road. Take Okemos Road to Jolly Road to South Meridian Road, which is the posted detour.
• If you're traveling south on North Meridian Road, you will not be able to turn onto Grand River Avenue.
• Grand River Avenue and North Meridian Road remain open for access to businesses and homes, but not to through traffic at the intersection.

The Grand River Avenue bridge remains closed as the new bridge is being constructed. Weather dependent, the new bridge is currently expected to be opened to traffic in January or February.

UPDATE (8/5/25)

As part of the Grand River Avenue/M-43 Bridge Replacement Project, MDOT will close the South Meridian Road/Grand River Avenue intersection on Monday, August 11, to raise the intersection’s elevation to match the new bridge.

This closure will remain in effect until mid-to-late September, depending on the weather conditions. The detour is South Meridian Road to Jolly Road.
