According to Michigan State University, 44% of Michigan residents rely on groundwater as the source of their drinking water. Community water supply systems that use groundwater supply approximately 1.7 million people with their drinking water. Private water wells that tap into groundwater also supply more than a million residents with drinking water.

While not every area is impacted, some areas of groundwater contamination have been identified. One such group of chemicals found in groundwater is per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS are human-made chemicals used in various consumer and industrial products. PFAS do not easily break down and some even accumulate in the body as well as the environment.

A research team at Michigan State University created a survey to assess Michigan residents attitudes and perceptions on risks to their drinking water, specifically concerning PFAS. Participants are welcome to take the survey regardless of if they are on a public water supply system or have private well water. The survey should take between 15-20 minutes and all responses will be anonymous.

Meridian Township residents should note that the Township does not have any known PFAS sites. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has provided a map of known Michigan PFAS sites.
