The solar array on the roof of the Meridian Service Center (2100 Gaylord C. Smith Court, East Lansing) is nearing completion.
"The Meridian Service Center was chosen at the most economical site to help achieve our renewable energy and carbon reduction goals," stated LeRoy Harvey, Meridian Township's Environmental Programs Coordinator.
The flat roof of the Meridian Service Center and large unshaded area allowed enough space for a large solar system. The 142 KW system, the largest installed on Meridian Township facilities to date, is expected to offset 100% of the annual energy usage of the building.
A total of 355 panels will produce 161,562 kwh per year, saving approximately $18,300 annually. The contractor, Absolute Environmental Solutions, estimates that the $294,000 system will pay for itself in 12 years. Over 25 years, it is estimated to save $875,300.
