(LOCATION UPDATE)
Our Stewardship Saturday, tomorrow, June 14th from 9:30 am to 12 pm will now be at Red Cedar Glen Preserve. We do not have our native transplants in from our grower yet, so we are changing our plans to pull and scout two different invasive species at one of our favorite preserves! This preserve can be found at the end of Sylvan Glen Road (or 1000 Sylvan Glen Road works too), in Okemos and park all the way at the end of the road in front of the turnaround. Please be mindful not to block anybody in and be aware of the neighbors' driveways. If you plan to attend, more details are below on what we will be doing. RSVPs are very much appreciated for planning reasons, but they are never mandatory. My work cell number is 517.897.3610 in case you are running late, or need help finding the location.
Long layers are recommended to help protect against irritating plants and insects. The mosquitoes are out, but not too bad and we will have spray and protective sleeves with us. We will be working on two new species to the MCC that staff have mostly been managing. We will be scouting and pulling/cutting wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius) and common speedwell (Veronica officinalis). Our focus will start out pulling veronica out of prescribed burn unit and our stewardship area in Legg Park - this species can be reinvigorated by fire, so we need to scout that area thoroughly and pull anything we see. We hope to see you there to connect, learn, and conserve!
Stewardship Saturdays occur every other Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm at a different location. Help the Meridian Conservation Corps restore habitat across our parks and preserves through activities like invasive plant removal and sowing native seeds. Stewardship workdays are a great way to get outdoors and improve our community!
Participants are encouraged to pre-register but walk-ins are welcome. To register, or for more information, please contact Land Stewardship Coordinator Emma Campbell at ecampbell@meridian.mi.us or call at 517.853.4614. All workdays are outdoors and may be canceled due to inclement weather. If you would like to join the Meridian Conservation Corps to receive email updates on future stewardship events and get MCC swag, visit the Meridian Conservation Corps webpage to sign up.
