The Meridian Community Band will celebrate its 50th anniversary by hosting a spring concert on Sunday, May 18 at 4:00 at MacDonald Middle School (1601 Burcham Drive, East Lansing). This event is free and open to the public.

The 80-person ensemble will be led by director Michael Scholes, as well as three guest conductors:

• Beverly Young Hawkins (Band leader from 1974-1979)
• Carolyn Sherrill (Band leader from 1990-2016)
• John T. Madden (Band Leader from 2019-2022)

Founded as the Okemos Community Band in 1974, the group was later named Meridian Community Band in 1978 to reflect its connection to the Township. The band now performs 9-12 concerts per season in a wide range of settings. The mission of the Meridian Community Band is to provide an opportunity for community musicians to come together in an enjoyable and cooperative atmosphere to practice, perfect, and perform inspiring and educational concerts for the benefit of the greater community.
